Maps are a tool used for representing a certain worldview; literally, to present what a culture 'sees' and elide what they consider unimportant. European ways of seeing, of mapmaking, are what we are most familiar with, from Strabo to Mercator. But mapmaking traditions from around the world can give us a glimpse into a different way of seeing. And from this different perspective, we can create more diverse worlds and widen the scope of the types of stories we can tell. In this panel, we will talk about some examples of non-European cartography, mapmaking and colonization, and non-European geographies with their worldbuilding possibilities.
